Do You Have Enough Uninsured Motorist Coverage in Florida?

By USA Insurance Group · April 7, 2026

USA Insurance Group is a licensed independent agency that compares UM/UIM options across 14+ carrier partners, so your coverage actually matches your risk.

Uninsured motorist coverage (UM) is a Florida auto insurance add-on that pays for your injuries and losses, up to your policy limits, when the driver who hit you has no insurance at all.

It matters more in Florida than in most states: roughly 1 in 4 drivers on Florida roads carries no car insurance, one of the highest uninsured-driver rates in the country.

What Is Uninsured Motorist Coverage?

Uninsured motorist coverage (UM) protects you when you're injured in an accident caused by a driver who has no insurance. Underinsured motorist coverage (UIM) steps in when the at-fault driver has insurance — but not enough of it to cover your actual damages.

Together, UM/UIM coverage fills a gap that Florida's standard auto insurance structure leaves open. Here's what it can cover:

  • Medical expenses beyond what your Personal Injury Protection (PIP) covers
  • Lost wages if your injuries keep you out of work
  • Pain and suffering — something PIP doesn't cover at all
  • Funeral expenses
  • Damages when the at-fault driver's policy limit isn't enough

What Happens If You're Hit by an Uninsured Driver

When someone with no insurance rear-ends you at a red light, here's what happens without UM coverage:

Your PIP insurance pays up to 80% of your medical bills and 60% of lost wages — up to your $10,000 limit. After that, you're on your own. You can try to sue the uninsured driver personally, but if they don't carry insurance, they likely don't have significant assets to recover either. A personal lawsuit against an uninsured driver rarely leads to meaningful compensation.

With UM coverage, your own policy covers the gap. You're not left fighting an uphill legal battle or absorbing costs out of pocket.

In Florida, PIP covers your immediate medical bills up to your $10,000 limit — but PIP doesn't cover pain and suffering, and that limit runs out fast. UM coverage picks up where PIP leaves off, paying for the costs PIP won't touch when the at-fault driver can't pay.

Why UM Coverage Is Especially Important in Florida

Most states require insurers to offer uninsured motorist coverage — but in Florida, UM/UIM is optional. You can reject it in writing.

That means many Florida drivers are on the road without it, often because they didn't realize what they were waiving when they signed their policy documents.

With roughly 1 in 4 Florida drivers uninsured, that's a meaningful exposure for anyone on the road here. UM/UIM coverage is the tool built specifically to close that gap. It's also one of several reasons Florida drivers pay more than the national average — and why getting the right coverage matters more here than in most states.

How Much UM Coverage Do You Need?

A common rule of thumb: match your UM limits to your bodily injury liability limits. If you're carrying $100,000/$300,000 in liability, consider the same in UM/UIM.

Florida drivers also have a unique option worth knowing about: stacked vs. non-stacked UM coverage.

Stacked Coverage

If you have multiple vehicles on your policy, stacked coverage lets you combine the UM limits across all vehicles for a single accident.

Costs more — provides significantly stronger protection.

Non-Stacked Coverage

Limits you to the UM coverage on the specific vehicle you were driving at the time of the accident.

Lower cost — more limited protection.

Whether stacked coverage is the right call depends on your specific situation — how many vehicles you have, your overall coverage levels, and your risk tolerance. It's exactly the kind of conversation an agent should be walking you through.
